OCTOBER 19, 2022

On October 19 the project will be presented at AMARE during a concert at the Institute of Sonology in the concert hall of the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. The presentation will include 29 pieces published on postcards, or rather the postcards themselves published in an edition of 350. Each postcard includes a QR-code to a specific piece, and connects the listener to respective piece either on this website or the bandcamp release. The postcards are available for free at the reception desk of the Royal Conservatoire on the 4th floor of Amare.

THE FOLLOWING CALL TO PARTICIPATE WAS OPEN IN THE PERIOD FROM NOVEMBER 2021 UNTIL JANUARY 2022 which is the period during which all related recordings were made. The war in Ukraine had not yet started. The biggest concerns were still related to Covid19.

the acoustic memory of a building

NEW EMERGENCES* invites you to participate in the project ACOUSTIC INTERIORS. We want to create sonic portraits of the two buildings between which the Royal Conservatoire is currently transitioning: the old one at Juliana van Stolberglaan 1, a building full of stories, and the brand new Amare, an almost empty building at Spuiplein 150.

Which sounds in the old busy building would you like to preserve? Which sounds from Amare would you like to capture before it gets busy there? And after the old building has been abandoned, which spaces would you like to revisit? The ACOUSTIC INTERIORS project presentation will take place some time in 2022. The final presentation will include a digital release, an installation and a website. Any additional formats and recordings proposed by the participants are welcome.

The set-up is very simple : A small group of people positions themselves at a location of their choice, in a room or hallway, or any other architectural environment. One participant sits quietly with binaural microphones in their ears, listening to the location, to the soundscape.

All other participants on location contribute to the soundscape that this one listener experiences. Anything goes: making sounds with objects in the space or with objects and instruments brought to this sonic intervention, using the voice, texts or words in ANY language. The "performers" play with the acoustics of the space, with the resonances, and with the distance to the listener. They come close and move far away. The listener experiences a sonic massage, and makes a binaural recording at the same time.  Each sound composition created in this way can later be experienced by other listeners through headphones, as if they themselves had been that original first listener.

Each time a new location is being chosen, another participants becomes the listener. Ideally as many recordings are being made as participants are present, this way every participant has the full experience. Each recording lasts for about 10 minutes and is also being documented via video.

database of acoustic memories & presentation
The first phase of the project requires the creation of a database with binaural recordings and the exact GPS locations of where each recording was made. In a next step, the recordings are being made available. They can be listened to as is via an online listening archive, but also used to create installations, performances or (headphone) concerts. The form of the final presentation will be determined by the participants.

A building full of stories : Juliana van Stolberglaan 1
For 41 years - from 1980 to 2021 - the building at Juliana van Stolberglaan 1 was a special place, for making music, for developing ideas, and for meeting musicians from all over the world. Anyone who - since 1980 - has had the opportunity to study or work in this building by architect Leon Waterman at Juliana van Stolberglaan, will have memories linked to spaces and places in and around the building. Some corners have their own very characteristic sounds: the sliding doors of the main entrance, the hollow slope down on the way to the studios, the intercom where names are being called when study rooms become available, the candy vending machines, or the sound of slamming doors on the corridors along Prinses Beatrixlaan.

A yet almost empty building : Spuiplein 150
At the moment the new building is almost empty and thus - theoretically - available for sound recordings and sonic interventions. For a short while, many rooms, halls, dance studios, study rooms, classrooms, dressing rooms and offices will be empty and not yet in use. This temporary vacancy offers the perfect condition to make sound recordings of – and at – this new location, before all its future inhabitants arrive, and stories of their own will be written.
